Here's To Some Positive Changes This Next Year

What a freak show ’04 turned out to be, aye? I’m hoping this next year is a bit groovier.

Despite the re-election of the most frightening moron in the world, I will always remember the passing year fondly because of my two girls. Having them come into my life has truly changed everything, just like all the old clichés tell you. I am just amazed by them daily and pray that the radical-right isn’t successful in trying to break-up “alternative” families, such as my own.

When I woke up this morning the first thing I heard was a church service that’s broadcast each Sunday on the local classical station. The preacher has this thick Texan drawl and sounds like he should be a parody of himself. Frightening. He was talking about how the issue of homosexuality is tearing apart churches. He said that it is thwarting attention away from other more important issues. (Agreed.) He said that homosexuals should be ministered to and welcomed into churches just like anyone else. However, he made sure that he also pointed out that the practice of homosexuality goes against Christian teachings.

In other words, gays should be preached to and allowed to join churches so that they can be brainwashed to feel shitty about themselves. Then, once they realize it’s a terrible sin, the homosexuals will stop doing all those icky queer things that give right-wingers the heebie-jeebies.

I wrote a furious e-mail to all the upper-management at the station. (I’m sure it’ll do a lot of good.) These people are set on forcing their ideals on society as a whole. You believe homosexuality is a sin? OK. Fine. Don’t break up my family just because it doesn’t fit in well with your belief system though. I think that most “Christian” families are hypocritical fucks but that doesn’t mean that I’m out to destroy them. I just want them to mind their own business and leave me the hell alone!

The silver lining to all this is that families like mine even exist amid the current social climate. Also, like it or not, right-wingers are socially required to be more and more civil to us queers, at least publicly.

I’ve said this before but it bears repeating. All the ignorant assholes that are so opposed to gay equal rights will look just as stupid and hateful in twenty years as those who opposed the civil rights movement for blacks do now. History is on our side, whether the “right” admits it or not.

Anyway, I’m so over it all I want to scream. On one hand I just want to pick up and move to Canada. Yet I can’t help but think that it’s my destiny to fight the injustices around me. Otherwise why would “God” have put me into my current circumstances: gay man in a committed long-term homosexual relationship with two (hopefully) soon-to-be-adopted children and a federal employee to boot!?! Take that Bush!!!

Hey. This all reminds me that I saw a fantastic film over the weekend. It was Latter Days and is about a frivolous L.A. queer and a Mormon missionary hooking up and the conflicts between those two worlds. It’s probably one of the very best “gay” movies that I’ve ever seen and it really leaves the viewer with a feeling of life’s purpose when finished. I highly recommend this movie.

Well, that’s it for now. Thank the little Christ child that the holidays are over. I’ve been under the weather since Christmas Eve and blame it primarily on stress. I’m so over it that I don’t even want to write about what went on over the holidays. I’d prefer to look ahead at this point.
